Sketches
I draw daily with a pen, watercolors or pencil in a sketchbook I always carry. I go to hear music, walk around the city or hike in the country. I do views of nature, impressions of the musicians I’m hearing or imagined scenes.
The process of drawing gives me a solid expression of my sensations and perceptions. I am recording the experience of seeing and the changes in light dynamics, in the atmosphere, the weather and my materials: what kind of paper, it’s texture, color and absorbency, how hard or soft a pencil, the density and hue of the paint.
My compositional choices; what I decide to draw, becomes the narrative and I may use trees, curtains, or a bridge to introduce a sense of theatricality to what is a performance. The squiggles of the pen or cross-hatching with a pencil can indicate motion in the music or a breeze in the forest.
Three attributes I must access are my eyes for vision, my brain for organizing the logic of the perceived sensations and my hands for translating these sensations to the page while assessing the shifts in form and shadow.
The mixing of colors, their luminosity, translucence and gradation oppose the whiteness of the paper, often best left blank to introduce the image more succinctly.
These sketches are all 9 1/2”x 11”. Pen, watercolor and gouache.
Paintings
Painting from nature with natural light is ideal but not always practical. In some instances, a painting is completed referencing a sketch that was done previously from nature capturing the light and shadow at a specific time of day or night.
These 21 paintings share the fact of being realized at the location they depict in daylight hours with a decision to arrest time, light, shadow and atmosphere at a decided upon moment.
Only “Interior at Audubon” was during inclement weather so I ended up inside. All others were during Spring, Summer or Fall in nice weather and with a limited palette of oils and pastels, or watercolors, pen or graphite.
